Lupine Wildflower Study

Wildflower Set #1

Inside Preparation:

I can’t possibly list all the lupines you might find so please consult a local field guide to see which lupine you may encounter during your OHC. Be sure to note the blooming time since it will vary by variety.

  • ¨ Sundial lupine (Lupinus perennis L.) Look for the range on USDA.
  • ¨ Bigleaf or Blue Pod lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl.) Look for the range on USDA.
  • ¨ Miniature lupine (Lupinus bicolor) Look for range on USDA.
  • ¨ You can read the information in the Handbook of Nature Study for the sweet pea for more information on this flower family.
  • ¨ You may wish to watch this short video of lupine (including a bee visit): Lupine.

Outdoor Hour Time:

Look for lupine growing in loose sandy soils, many times near a beach.

  • ¨ Make sure you know how tall your lupine might be in real life. Some look like a bush and some are very close to the ground.

Follow-Up Activity:

Note: Ebook users can find custom notebook pages to use for the lupine flower and the pea family.

  • ¨ Create a notebook page for any lupine you discover and observe.
  • ¨ Start a pea family notebook page. Keep a running list over time of the flowers you observe and/or study in this plant family.
  • ¨ Advanced study: Learn about the relationship between a lupine and a butterfly (host plant). You may wish to do further research on the plants in your area that are insect larvae host plants.
  • ¨ Drawing lesson: Use this step by step lesson from John Muir Laws to sketch lupine in your nature journal.
