Outdoor Hour Challenge -Autumn Staghorn Sumac Study

I just got back from a trip to the east coast and the sumac was so colorful and pretty! I really regret not stopping on our hikes to take more photos of this amazing plant. But, this week is your chance to get out and look for sumac in your local area.

“The sumac is a beautiful shrub in summer because of its fernlike leaves; it is picturesque in winter and its colors in autumn are most brilliant. Its dark red fruit clusters remain upon it during the entire winter.”

Handbook of Nature Study, Lesson 189

The study of the sumac can continue right into the winter months using the lesson suggestions in the Handbook of Nature Study. Mark your planner to revisit the sumac in a few months.
